The Defense Health Agency is deploying ambient listening technology across the Military Health System in a phased approach that began February 2026 and should be completed in Spring 2026.
The deployment of the new technology directly supports DHA’s goals to reduce administrative burden and improve the patient’s experience by enabling providers to spend more time engaging in direct patient care. It also represents the DHA’s investment in advancing the readiness of our medical force and the warfighters they are privileged to serve.
What is Ambient Listening?
This technology analyzes conversations between patients and providers during medical appointments to support capturing clinical notes and reducing administrative burden on medical staff. The use of this technology supports the DHA in optimizing better patient outcomes and continually improving the safe and effective delivery of care.
Limited Fielding at Military Hospitals and Clinics
A six-week ambient listening limited fielding was conducted at four military medical centers, Oct. 31, 2025 – Dec. 11, 2025, to test this capability:
- Madigan Army Medical Center
- Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune
- Naval Medical Center Portsmouth
- Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center
DHA conducted a brief survey to capture feedback from participating facilities to help determine how ambient listening can improve care for MHS patients. They also received feedback during engagement sessions, town hall meetings, site visits and other forums. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
